5 Most Popular Design Trends Explained

Interior design comes in various layouts and aesthetics, sometimes strikingly distinct and other times with only the subtlest of differences. Here are some of the trending interior design styles- modernist, japandi, minimalist, industrial and biophilic:

  • Modernist
Characterised as a break from clutter and simple forms, modernist style of design is deep-rooted in Modernism. The modern art movement, which eschewed the maximalist Victorian design inclinations in favour of a form-follows-function philosophy, gave rise to modern home design. Sensibilities associated with minimalism started to give way to postmodernism and a revival of decoration. Some traits of this interior design style would include – clean lines, neutral colors, open plan and low furniture. Simplifying the modern life with its design guidelines, Modernist style is a step back from the Minimalist type of style.

  • Industrial
The end of the second industrial revolution encouraged a lot of movement between countries, and trends towards globalization became more apparent. Multiple factories moved and shuttered their operations to different countries leaving vacant industrial buildings. As a result, leaving behind an endless resource of high-quality materials to take advantage of. The melange of old rustic charm and sleek modernity catalysed the industrial interior design style. Inspired from the untouched beauty of industrial buildings – the juxtaposition of old and new – makes for a layered and considered statement. In many ways industrial design style is sustainable as it encourages the use of recycled or salvaged materials. The idea of exposing bare walls, construction details and mechanisms of the original structure.

  • Biophilic (Nature Inspired)
A style that reflects on the bucolic bliss in this modern world. Over time our connections with nature took routes along latitudes – parallel to us – with the rise of technology. A desire to live closer to green than gray. A revolutionary interior design style that evolved from including plants and natural elements in our dwellings is now a blend of nature inspired details, colors, forms and even lighting! This style has shown direct impacts on health and wellness, from fostering productivity, reducing stress and ameliorating creativity. In our ever changing urban environments, nature humanises design and imbibes itself into the way we live, work and learn.

  • Minimalist
An interior design style that continues to leave an imprint in our dwellings emerged in the 90’s, a style that resonates with “less is more”. A simplified approach to decluttering dictated by monochromatic palettes and clean lines. This approach in interiors allows more than just the space to stand out, for instance an opportunity to view the people, their interactions with the space. Minimalism often streamlines forms and functions, leaving no space for nonessentials –simplicity and need in a conjunction. An oasis of comfort, celebration of minimalism and an attempt to conscious living.

  • Japandi
According to Leni Calas of Ward 5 Design, “Japandi design is the combination of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese rustic minimalism to create a feeling of art, nature, and simplicity.” This style blends the hygge of earthiness along with the tranquility of wasabi-sabi and a beautiful celebration of craftsmanship and handmade pieces. The warmer colors of Japanese design strikes a balance with the stark edges of Scandinavian aesthetics. Anchored in minimalistic principles of Scandinavian designs and tethered by the appreciation of imperfections in Japanese traditions, Japandi juxtaposes earthy tones with luxe textures.
